Koei | Architectural Bookcase in Tiger Maple, Walnut, & Padauk
This piece has been sold and is listed as an example of my custom work. Please message for a quote before purchasing.
Named Koei — meaning “Tiger’s Shadow” — this one-of-a-kind architectural bookcase draws its character from the shifting light and depth found within figured wood. The tiger maple shelves form the visual heart of the piece, their striped figure revealing itself subtly as light moves across the surface, like a shadow passing over stone.
The structure is framed by richly figured walnut side members, chosen for their depth, warmth, and natural contrast against the pale maple. African padauk braces cross the rear in a bold yet disciplined gesture, their deep red tone echoed in carefully placed accent wedges throughout the piece. These elements are not decorative alone; they articulate structure, balance, and intention.
The design emphasizes clarity of form and honesty of construction. Traditional joinery is left visible and expressive, allowing the piece to read as a unified structure rather than an assembly of parts. The shelves appear to float within the frame, supported by precise joinery that speaks to quiet strength and permanence.
Tiger maple is prized for its chatoyance — a shifting, almost liquid figure that responds to changing light. This natural movement gives Koei its name, evoking the restrained presence of a tiger felt more than seen.
Designed as a freestanding bookcase or display piece, Koei functions equally as storage and sculpture — an architectural presence that brings order, rhythm, and a sense of calm power to the room it inhabits.

• Hand selected tiger maple, curly black walnut, and African padauk
• Protected by a hardwax oil finish, polished to a smooth, matte sheen
