Named Chowa, meaning “harmony,” this one-of-a-kind coffee table is an exploration of balance. A bold leopardwood base is set against the quiet restraint of a walnut top, while ebony pegs provide a precise, jewel-like accent.

In fine furniture, highly figured exotic woods are often used sparingly to temper their intensity. Chowa reconsiders this approach by allowing leopardwood to define the structure itself. Through careful proportion and contrast, its natural movement is composed into a unified whole. The result is a work that feels resolved, deliberate, and singular.

Named Mujō, the Japanese word for “impermanence,” this one-of-a-kind bench brings together precious, exceptionally dense, and rare materials to create something that feels almost permanent. Its massive live edge top is cut from an exceptionally rare slab of marblewood, a material whose dramatic veining resembles polished stone while retaining the warmth and life of wood. Natural cracks, weathered edges, and contrasting butterfly keys preserve the history of the slab rather than conceal it.

A client loved an existing Flowing Water bookcase but needed different proportions and a particular wood combination.

The original design was re-proportioned around the client's space and built in their chosen materials while preserving the joinery and overall character that drew them to the piece.

Reimagined for a New Purpose

The Brief

Create a compact bench using the same joinery-forward language found in Flowing Water’s larger trestle-style furniture.

The Response

The signature trestle base was reworked for seating, with the proportions, stance, and structure adjusted to suit a bench rather than a table while preserving the exposed joinery and architectural character of the original design.

The Brief

Create a tall, narrow statement bookcase for a specific alcove while preserving the joinery-forward character that defines Flowing Water.

The Response

A new bookcase system was developed around the space, combining exposed tusk-tenon shelving with pegged trestle-style joinery. Tiger maple shelves were chosen to echo nearby maple millwork, while walnut grounded the piece with a darker structural contrast.
