Named Mujō, the Japanese word for “impermanence,” this one-of-a-kind bench brings together precious, exceptionally dense, and rare materials to create something that feels almost permanent. Its massive live edge top is cut from an exceptionally rare slab of marblewood, a material whose dramatic veining resembles polished stone while retaining the warmth and life of wood. Natural cracks, weathered edges, and contrasting bowtie keys preserve the history of the slab rather than conceal it.
Beneath the top, a substantial walnut base is constructed like a miniature timber frame. Paired stretchers, visible through-tenons, wedged joinery, and hand-fit hickory pegs create a structure of extraordinary strength and architectural presence. The generous overhang gives the slab the feeling of a broad roof resting above the frame, while the dark walnut provides a quiet foundation for the marblewood’s bold figure.
Marblewood is exceptionally dense, hard, and difficult to source in furniture-scale slabs. Its flowing dark lines, golden-brown color, and stone-like surface make every section of the top visually distinct. The natural fissure running through the slab is stabilized with walnut bowties, transforming a mark of age and change into one of the bench’s defining details.
Perfect as an entryway bench, gallery statement piece, or sculptural seating for a refined interior, Mujō brings together rare material, visible structure, and quiet strength. Though it feels nearly immovable, more like polished stone than conventional furniture, its name serves as a reminder that even the strongest and most precious things remain shaped by time.
