SOLD - Custom Japanese Chigaidana Bookcase
This listing is for a sold commission. Available as a custom order — please contact me to discuss your project.
This chigaidana-style bookcase was designed and handcrafted as a one-of-a-kind commission, combining traditional Japanese joinery with a striking live edge black walnut slab. The asymmetrical shelving arrangement provides both functional storage and artistic display, while the sliding shoji door conceals a compartment for more private items.
Every element of this piece reflects my design philosophy — timeless proportions, natural materials, and meticulous craftsmanship that honors centuries-old woodworking traditions. The walnut slab top retains its natural edge, bringing an organic, flowing form to balance the precise geometry of the joinery. The shoji door is fitted with handmade kumiko and traditional washi paper, creating a light-filtering panel that softens the overall composition.
Materials & Sustainability
• Solid black walnut, sustainably harvested in Pennsylvania and New York forests
• Handmade kumiko latticework with genuine washi paper
• Traditional joinery, no visible fasteners
• Finished with pure tung oil for a warm, natural luster and long-lasting protection
Included with All Commissions
• Certificate of authenticity
• Wood care kit
• Detailed assembly and care instructions
